Shyanne Murray
Finding purpose in e-waste recycling

At Endeavour’s spacious workshop, Shyanne Murray transforms discarded electronics into valuable recyclable materials, combining environmental sustainability with meaningful employment opportunities for people with diverse abilities and backgrounds.

“I pull stuff apart. Like TVs and monitors and stuff, getting all the metal out of it. It’s not hard, just with a drill and screws,” said Shyanne.

The workplace at Endeavour provides an ideal environment for this specialised recycling work. “It’s a big workshop dedicated to recycling,” said Shyanne. “E-waste is anything electronic – such as phones, computers and televisions—taking them apart helps recover valuable metals that would otherwise end up in landfill.”

Shyanne’s journey to Endeavour began after completing her secondary education when she was searching for work that aligned with her practical abilities. Her career path wasn’t meticulously planned; rather, it emerged organically as an opportunity that resonated with her skills and interests.

“I finished Grade 12 and started looking for work,” said Shyanne. “This opportunity at Endeavour came up, and I visited to see if I would enjoy it. I walked around the workshop and knew it was the right place for me.”

“I enjoy pulling all the bits apart. I love it. I like the big printers better because they have the normal screws which are easier to get”

Each day at Endeavour presents Shyanne with new challenges and opportunities to develop her technical skills. “You need patience and good attention to detail,” said Shyanne.

“Some days we might get a shipment of office equipment with hundreds of parts to sort, other days it’s mostly home electronics. I’ve learned how to identify different metals and components that have the most recycling value.”

Shyanne finds genuine satisfaction in her specialised work, particularly in the hands-on dismantling process.

Perhaps most importantly, Shyanne feels valued and supported in her workplace environment. “Endeavour is supportive. It’s a really positive place to work,” said Shyanne.

By participating in e-waste recycling, Shyanne isn’t just finding personal fulfillment—she’s contributing to environmental sustainability by recovering valuable resources that might otherwise end up in landfills, demonstrating that meaningful work comes in many forms and that satisfaction often lies in matching one’s abilities to an environment where contribution is genuinely valued.
