The Career Education Short Course assists students to make informed decisions about their participation in future study and work that will form their career. While the course will effectively prepare students for employment and managing future careers, it helps connect them with their skills and strengths and how that might connect to various subjects, qualifications and training and careers. They develop understanding of themselves as learners to effect control of their employment future. In this course, students implement strategies and approaches for locating, organising and examining information; using prior knowledge and scaffolding; and learning with and from others. They develop strategies to enhance their capacity as self-directed and lifelong learners.
In Topic 1 (My current skills and attributes), students develop knowledge of the skills required to thrive in the current workplace and understand how their own skills align with a range of occupations. In Sub-topic 1 (Understanding myself), there is specific focus on accessing work opportunities, developing appropriate skills for work and career, and making more informed subject and career choices. Students consider personal attributes, examine management skills and work habits, recognising strengths and areas for improvement. The learning resources provided in each of the five lessons have links to the manufacturing industry and its sub-industries.
